Brickwork is easy to underestimate because drawings show wall length and height while procurement needs pieces, mortar ingredients and an allowance for breakage. The reliable starting point is net wall volume—not floor area or a guess per room.

Calculate net wall area first
Multiply wall length by wall height, then subtract doors, windows and other substantial openings. Multiply that net area by wall thickness to obtain brickwork volume. Keep 115 mm partition walls separate from 230 mm external or load-bearing masonry because their quantities differ significantly.
Brick size and joint thickness matter
The calculator uses a common brick size and a nominal mortar joint. Measure a sample from the actual supplier when accuracy matters. Even a small change in average dimensions changes the number of bricks per cubic metre across a full house.
Add wastage intentionally
- Use a modest allowance for normal breakage and cutting.
- Increase the allowance only when handling, access or detailing justifies it.
- Store bricks on a stable surface near the work area.
- Count accepted deliveries, not only the number written on the supplier bill.
- Keep damaged pieces for closures where appropriate instead of discarding usable material.
Use consumption as a quality-control signal
