Reinforcement is specified by diameter and length, purchased by weight and often delivered in standard stock lengths. A useful estimate must connect all three without changing the engineer’s bar schedule.

The standard unit-weight formula
For preliminary metric estimates, unit weight in kilograms per metre is commonly calculated as d² ÷ 162, where d is the nominal bar diameter in millimetres. A 12 mm bar is therefore about 0.889 kg per metre.
Start from the approved bar bending schedule
The calculator does not decide bar diameter, spacing, laps, anchorage or development length. Take each bar mark and its net running length from approved structural information, then calculate purchase quantities diameter by diameter.
Why stock length changes the order
Suppliers sell standard lengths. Dividing required running length by the available stock length and rounding upward reveals the actual number of bars. Cutting patterns, laps and unusable offcuts create the difference between net design weight and purchase weight.
Check delivery and consumption
- Confirm diameter markings and grade against the order.
- Record supplier weight or bundle details and delivery date.
- Keep bars raised from soil and sort them by diameter.
- Record issues to each footing, column, beam or slab.
- Reconcile unused full lengths and reusable offcuts after the work.
