Earthwork is paid and transported in different states. Drawings describe the excavation in the ground, while loosened soil occupies more space in a stockpile or truck. Mixing those quantities can distort both cost and haul planning.

Start with geometric in-situ volume
For a uniform trench or rectangular pit, multiply length by width by average depth. Calculate different depths separately. The drawing quantity may need adjustment for working space, safe slopes, shoring, overbreak and irregular rock surfaces.
Plan what happens to every cubic metre
- Identify soil suitable for later backfill and store it safely.
- Keep organic topsoil separate when it will be reused for landscaping.
- Apply bulking only when estimating loose stockpile or haul volume.
- Use the truck’s legal usable capacity, not only its advertised body size.
- Confirm disposal location, tipping fee, route and access before excavation starts.
Track actual machine hours and loads
Record excavator start and finish times, truck numbers, load counts, disposal receipts and weather interruptions. Those records explain why the paid cost differs from a simple rate-per-cubic-metre estimate.
