A tank that is too small runs out during supply gaps; one that is unnecessarily large costs more, adds weight and may hold water longer than intended. A useful starting point is daily demand multiplied by the reserve duration.

Estimate demand for the actual household
Occupancy is only the first input. Laundry habits, fixtures, gardening, cleaning, guests and seasonal changes affect use. Keep drinking-water storage, rainwater reuse and fire-fighting reserves separate when they have different quality or regulatory requirements.
Match reserve days to supply reliability
- Review how often municipal or bore supply is actually available.
- Allow for pump downtime and planned maintenance.
- Include freeboard and low-level volume that cannot be drawn reliably.
- Choose a standard tank size at or above the calculated nominal volume.
- Provide safe access for inspection, cleaning and overflow observation.
Coordinate tank, pump and pipe design
Capacity alone does not guarantee good service. The designer must coordinate inlet flow, overflow, drainage, venting, pump duty, pressure, isolation valves and protection from contamination. Record cleaning and maintenance with the rest of the house documentation.
