Concrete ordering starts with geometry: length × width × thickness for a slab, or the appropriate cross-section multiplied by length for a beam or column. That gives wet, placed volume. Material estimation then allows for voids and volume change when dry ingredients are combined.

Wet volume and dry volume are different
One cubic metre of finished concrete needs more than one cubic metre of loose dry ingredients. Preliminary calculations often apply a dry-volume factor before dividing the total by the selected cement:sand:aggregate ratio. The calculator shows this assumption so the result can be checked rather than treated as a black box.
Understand what the mix ratio means
A nominal 1:1.5:3 mix represents one part cement, one-and-a-half parts sand and three parts coarse aggregate by volume. It is not a substitute for an approved structural mix design. Structural concrete strength also depends on water-cement ratio, batching accuracy, aggregate quality, compaction and curing.
Site checks before ordering
- Confirm dimensions against the latest structural drawing.
- Deduct large voids only when the measurement method permits it.
- Separate concrete quantities by pour and element.
- Confirm whether concrete will be site-mixed or ready-mix.
- Allow for pump line, uneven formwork and handling losses where relevant.
- Plan testing, vibration and curing before the pour starts.
Compare estimated and actual consumption
After each pour, record bags issued, sand and aggregate consumed, ready-mix delivery tickets and rejected loads. A small variance can be normal; a repeated unexplained variance needs attention. Track cement, rod and sand in one shared site record so the next estimate becomes more accurate.
