What this estimate assumes

Why drainage decides whether a retaining wall survives

  • Water trapped behind a wall can double the pressure it has to resist. The granular backfill layer and weep holes are not optional extras—they are the wall.
  • Volumes come from preliminary proportioning: gravity walls at half the retained height in base width, cantilever walls at 0.6×H with a 250 mm stem.
  • Foundation depth is measured below finished ground on the low side, and should sit on firm undisturbed soil or rock.

  • Gravity wall volume/m = ((0.45 + 0.5H) / 2) × H
  • Gabion volume/m = 0.6H × H
  • RCC volume/m = 0.25 × H + max(0.3, 0.08H) × 0.6H

  • Total = (wall + steel + excavation + backfill + weep holes) × (1 + contingency%)
