Formwork (centering, shuttering, falsework) is the invisible half of every RCC pour. Homeowners budget cement and steel. Contractors lose money—or pad quotes—on ply, props and carpenter days. A shuttering calculator exists so you can see area before you hire, buy, or accept a “concrete inclusive” rate that is not inclusive.

What to measure

  • Slab soffit — plan length × width. Add slab-edge verticals (perimeter × thickness).
  • Beams — two sides (length × depth below slab) + soffit (length × width). Do not double-count the slab soffit sitting on the beam.
  • Columns — four faces × (storey height − slab thickness) × width. Circular columns use π × diameter × height.
  • Footings — pad sides if they are shuttered; many isolated pads are poured against excavated faces with only a kicker.
  • Stairs — waist soffit plus risers; stair shuttering is slow and often under-measured.

Reuse, props and labour

  2. 2Divide by expected reuses to get ply you must buy, or keep the full area for a hire quote.
  3. 3Props, spans and cups are a separate hire line—area alone understates a tall storey.
  4. 4Carpenter and helper days scale with complexity (drop beams, curved edges) more than with square metres.
  5. 5Striking time depends on span and cement type; do not pull props early to “free the ply.”

A 12 m × 10 m, 125 mm roof slab is about 120 m² of soffit plus ~5 m² of edges. Add beam sides and you may sit near 150–180 m² of hire for that pour. At a typical Nepal hire rate that is a visible line item—worth putting next to the labour cost tracker, not burying inside “miscellaneous.”

Check the quote, then photograph the set

Ask whether oil, cutting waste, extra props for cantilevers and stair forms are included. Photograph the erected shuttering (levels, props, joints) before steel goes in. Once concrete is up, you cannot prove the ply was double-layered or the props were missing. Store those photos in GharNaksa against the pour.

How is shuttering area calculated for a slab?

Slab soffit area is roughly the plan area of the slab (length × width), plus the vertical edge of the slab thickness around the perimeter. Beams add two sides and a soffit for the portion that drops below the slab. Deduct large openings only if they are not shuttered.

How many times can plywood formwork be reused in Nepal?

Film-faced plywood on a careful site often manages 6–8 uses; cheap ply on a rushed site may be done in 2–3. Hire shuttering is priced per use. Always apply a reuse factor so you do not buy a full house of ply for a two-storey frame.

Is formwork included in a contractor’s concrete rate?

Sometimes yes, often no. Ask whether the quoted “per cubic foot of concrete” includes centering, ply, props, labour to erect and strike, and oil. Missing shuttering is one of the fastest ways a cheap dhalai rate becomes an overrun.
